In the year 1969, This university established an Institute of Correspondence Programs and Continuing Education at the University of Mysore.

The motto of the university is to “HIGHER EDUCATION FOR EVERYONE, EVERYWHERE” and promises to help out those unreached to all those higher learning students. The Open University was established in the learning of the National Policy on Education-1986 on the recommendation of the Central Education Advisory Board, Government of India. The working professionals, students, the disadvantaged sections of the society and also students from backward regions, who cannot study education through regular on-campus mode get new options to buy the distance education platform. It is a leading state in the higher learning sector and its role is to enhance the education system of the state to a much higher level. This university has built up an excellent academic and administrative infrastructure, not only at its headquarters in Mysore but also at its 21 regional centres throughout the state.​ The contribution of the Karnataka University to the Open and Distance Learning system is invaluable. With the full State as its jurisdiction, it has established 21 Regional Centers in addition to recognizing a good number of affiliated Colleges as Study Centers across the State. The Courses, Syllabus, Study Materials, Contact Classes, Method of Testing, Transparency in the conduct of Examination, Evaluation and announcement of results.​ The quality of System Learning Management, Radio talks, and audio-video lecturers produced ‘in-house studios’ housed on the main campus have gained the admiration of a large community of distance aspirants across the Country as well as outside the Country. Admission to courses is done twice a year in January and June as per the UGC-DEB (University Grant Commission and Distance Education Bureau) guidelines, and the admission is done online. Access to E-content, E-access to SLMs, Books and journals in the main library; online lectures are an additional benefit to university students. The establishment of Science labs, virtual labs, Audio-Video, and the Re-establishment of the Radio station – ‘JNANA VANI’ are among the notable digital initiatives, this university has launched since the re-recognition of Karnataka University by UGC in 2018-19. Karnataka State Open University MBA Distance Education program

At the Postgraduate level, this university also provides a two-year MBA course. This MBA course is approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). The medium of study for the MBA course is 'English' only. However, the semester examination can be done either in English or Kannada. Karnataka State Open University MBA admission is completely based on the performance of students in the last qualifying examination. The MBA course provided by this university has 6 papers in each semester. In the first year of study, the students will deal with the general papers, whereas they can choose for specialisation in the second year of their study. The University provides seven specialisations under this course.

Eligibility Criteria for Karnataka State Open University MBA Program

Any bachelor’s degree from a recognised university with a minimum of 50% marks or a minimum of 45% Marks for SC/ST/CAT-I or In case the students do not have the fixed minimum marks, they must have completed 3 years experience at supervisory/ managerial/ professional level.
