TOPIC: The University of Calicut Provides Home-Based Education To Special Students
The University of Calicut, Kerala has started a new home-based program for special students. Those children who are identified under PwD (Persons with Disability) as a part of the CDMRP (Community Disability Management and Rehabilitation Program) can take the advantage of this program.
This program is managed by the Department of Psychology and conducted in association with professionals in an integrated telerehabilitation mode in which the students can communicate with the instructor directly through voice call or video call. Professionals from different sectors will support, counsel, and lecture to the students to enhance their skills.
The University of Kerala is providing the TLM (Teaching Learning Material) kits to the children. Along with the Teaching Learning Material kits the university of Calicut is also distributing watches, calculators, and mobile phones to enhance the reading and learning abilities along with speech, concentration, social and academic skills. Around 1876 Teaching Learning Material kits have been distributed to the children till now and there are around 22 teaching reading modules in each kit.
The University will make sure for the rehabilitation of the special needs children by giving them online or offline educational training, home-based horticulture therapy, life skills training, helpline numbers, mobile phones loaded with learning support applications with the help of Kerala Government Departments under the Community Disability Management and Rehabilitation Program (CDMRP). The university also provides manuals for parents that will be very useful to understand all the guidelines.
With the help of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), a guide called, “Life in the Times of Covid-19- A Guide for Parents of Children with Disabilities” had published earlier by Community Disability Management and Rehabilitation Program (CDMRP). This guide addresses about the mental health of the child’s caregivers including parents, hospital staff, helpers, nurses, and other support to the children.
This program from the University of Calicut has also conducted more than 15 programs including highlights about the needs of special students and published guidelines that will be very useful for parents. In addition to this, more than 55 video tutorials of home training were also released for the parents of children with special needs.
Further, the University of Calicut’s CDMRP has created a medical supply chain program to make sure a regular supply of medicines to the students. In the creation of the medical supply chain, The Social Justice Department of Kerala and community volunteer groups have helped.
The United Nation has been involved within the department of the Persons with Disability (PwD) section of the society. On 3rd December (earlier) it marked as a WORLD DISABILITY DAY.
